THE ESTATE In 1999, the family of Nikos and Flora Vourvoukelis, with a vision to revive the famed vineyard of Avdira, planted 20 stremmas on the area’s fertile hills with indigenous and international wine grape varieties. Gradually, a privately owned 120-stremma vineyard was developed, cultivated according to the rules of organic farming. The choice of organic cultivation was made due to the particular microclimate. Today, two of the family’s sons, Georgios and Odysseas, both with many years of studies in these fields, are engaged in viticulture and winemaking. The family’s youngest son, Alexios, has for now been won over by Medicine. In 2004, the family’s traditional, visitor-friendly Vourvoukelis winery was completed. It is located at the entrance of Avdira, next to the provincial road, 20 km from the city of Xanthi and 40 km from Kavala’s “Megas Alexandros” airport. The winery is equipped with state-of-the-art technology, operates under strict HACCP hygiene conditions, and is certified to ISO 22000 for quality assurance. At Ktima Vourvoukelis the visitor can experience the ritual of Wine. They can learn about the wine production process, tour the vineyard, visit the cellar of oak barrels where, under controlled temperature and humidity, the wines mature, as well as the bottle-aging area where, under natural temperature and humidity, the wines evolve. There is also a reception hall for visitors, an events hall for exhibitions and lectures, and a tasting room for initiation into the art and philosophy of wine.
